Karate Belt Levels

Karate Belt LevelsThe karate belt levels start with a white belt and is called10th Kyu, which translates to student, and progress backwards towards 1, or 1st Dan, a black belt. After Dan is reached it progresses upwards towards the 6th Dan. The color of the belt does not change for every progression, but often a black bar is added to denote the increase in rank.

The karate belt levels are judged by a Dan, who determines the performance of the students in sparring, basic technique, fighting spirit and katas. Katas are similar to shadow boxing. The student performs a series of moves, attacking and defending against one or more imaginary attackers. This preserves the form of karate, improves technique and is essential to progress.

The most popular karate belt levels are the Goju-Ryu karate ranking system. In this ranking system there are three levels with a white belt, two levels with the yellow belt, two levels with the green belt, three levels with a brown belt and six levels of black belts. Each progression is indicated by a black bar when the color of the belt remains the same.
